Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch Friday afternoon for Windsor and Essex County.
It is warning area residents to be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions and take necessary safety precautions.
The thunderstorm watch also was issued for Chatham-Kent and Rondeau Park.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain,” said the weather alert.
Thunderstorms were said to be approaching from southwest of Lake Erie are expected to rapidly move into Southwestern Ontario by early this evening.
“There is potential for torrential downpours, damaging wind gusts, and large hail from these thunderstorms,” the alert said.
