Stiff winds and continuing chances for rain have prompted the Essex Region Conservation Authority to issue a ‘flood outlook’ for the shores of Leamington and the western edge of Pelee Island.
Westerly winds are forecasted to reach sustained speeds of 30 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h. ERCA said the resultant waves on Lake Erie have the potential to cause shoreline erosion and even breakwall damage.
The affected area of Leamington stretches from the tip of Point Pelee National Park to the Leamington Marina.
“People should take extra caution and avoid shoreline areas,” ERCA stated. “The combination of slippery banks, waves, waves overtopping breakwalls, and fast-moving water can be dangerous.”
Children, pets, and livestock should especially be kept away from flowing water and shoreline areas.
The ‘flood outlook’ will remain in effect into Monday.
