The Windsor-Essex County area is under a severe thunderstorms warning.
Environment Canada said thunderstorms have developed ahead of an approaching cold front.
There is the potential for heavy downpours and rainfall amounts in the 50 to 80 millimetre range in an hour or two. Some locations may experience repeated thunderstorms and more rain through the night.
These thunderstorms may also produce damaging winds in excess of 90 km/h, hail and there is a slight chance of a tornado, said an Environment Canada bulletin.
Because of a new area of thunderstorms which has developed and is approaching from Michigan, the threat of severe storms will continue through the evening and possibly overnight.
