'Major winter storm' on the way for Southwestern Ontario, warns Environment Canada

It ain’t spring yet, say Environment Canada’s meteorologists — who are predicting a “major winter storm” to hit Southwestern Ontario on Monday.

Total snowfall of 15 to 25 centimetres is likely. Maybe even 30 centimetres around the Hamilton to Niagara corridor.

Here in Windsor-Essex, windy conditions are also forecast, making for local blowing snow and below-freezing temperatures.

The snow is expected to spread across the region during Monday’s daylight hours, then taper off Tuesday night. After that, we’ll have chances of flurries throughout the rest of the week.

What’s the reason? Well, it’s March in Canada.

If you need more of an explanation: a low pressure centre that is developing over the northwestern U.S. will be tracking just south of the Great Lakes.

Cold air from the Arctic is already in place over the Great Lakes. The low pressure area will force it upwards, resulting in condensation and precipitation.

On the plus side, due to the coldness of the air, Environment Canada says we can expect “a dry, fluffier snow” — so hopefully we’ll be spared some shovelling.
