Brace yourselves: Mother Nature may not be done soaking us. Environment Canada‘s weather office has issued a thunderstorm watch for all of southern Ontario, including Windsor-Essex.

“Meteorologists are tracking an area of severe thunderstorms capable of producing large hail, damaging winds and heavy downpours,” said the agency Wednesday.

“There is potential for heavy downpours giving rainfall in excess of 50 millimetres in one hour and wind gusts near 100 km/h are possible.”

According to Enivronment Canada, weather watchers have been monitoring the progress of a storm system crossing southern Michigan and heading eastward at 40 km/h.

Communities in the path of the system include Windsor, Amherstburg, Kingsville, Leamington, Chatham, Ridgetown, Rodney and Dutton.

“Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches,” Environment Canada advises.

“Strong wind gusts and hail can damage property and cause injuries. Local downpours can cause flash floods.”

Earlier in the day, Environment Canada reported a cold front moving eastward across Ontario through the afternoon and into the evening.

The agency said conditions are favourable for heavy storms just ahead of the front — with the possibility of hail stones as big as two to three centimetres in diameter.

Environment Canada continues to assess the situation and asks members of the public to stay tuned for updates.
