Cold temperatures hitting our region aren’t just cause for griping — they’re a serious health concern, according to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.
Acting officer of health Dr. Wajid Ahmed has issued a cold weather alert for Windsor-Essex based on Environment Canada’s predictions of dangerously low temperatures over the next few days.
The air temperature is expected to dip to -16 C (3 F) between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
Thursday night should feel even colder thanks to 40 to 60 km/h winds creating a chill of -29 C (-20 F).
There’s a 60 per cent chance of flurries on Thursday afternoon, with blowing snow likely in the early evening.
Ahmed warns that individuals without shelter in such weather are in immediate danger. Hypothermia and frostbite are real problems that must be guarded against.
Ahmed reminds the public that those who venture outside should cover as much exposed skin as possible.
People of all ages should be equipped with hats, scarves or face coverings, gloves or mittens, water-resistant coats and footwear, and several layers of clothing.
