Dreaming of a white Christmas? Dream on

It looks like Windsor-Essex residents will be left dreaming of a white Christmas this year, weather experts predict.

Tyler Hamilton, meteorologist with The Weather Network, says rain is in the forecast for all of Southern Ontario early this week, with above seasonal temperatures leading up to Christmas Eve. Tuesday’s forecasted rainfall will be the heaviest precipitation Windsor has experienced since November.

Hamilton says there is little to no chance of snowfall on Christmas, with temperatures predicted to be as high as 6 C on Dec. 24.  Strong, gusty winds are expected for Christmas Day.

But even though Windsor residents are in for a green Christmas this year, they are likely to experience their first real snowfall just in time for the Boxing Day weekend. Temperatures are forecasted to remain below zero into the New Year.

The Windsor-Essex region isn’t the only area in Canada that will experience a green Christmas this holiday season. No snowfall is forecast for all of coastal British Columbia or the Maritimes.

The heaviest snowfalls this Christmas will come from central and Northern Quebec as well as Northern Ontario.

Calgary might see the perfect white Christmas this year, predicts Hamilton, with a forecasted two centimetres of snow on the ground.

In terms of the long range forecast, Hamilton says that below-normal temperatures will persist throughout January and February in the Windsor-Detroit region, but it won’t be as cold as previous winters. The snowfall totals won’t be as extreme either, he predicts.

Windsor’s last white Christmas occurred in 2012. Last year, rainfall melted all the snow on the ground leaving Windsor residents without snow on Christmas day.
