You may be tempted to snicker at the irony that a discussion on climate change at the University of Windsor was called off due to Wednesday’s wild weather.

But plant biologist Catherine Potvin’s afternoon lecture was only one of many special events and regularly scheduled activities that were shut down by the sudden snowstorm.

Among the casualties:

As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, Essex County OPP closed Highway 401 from Windsor to Tilbury in both directions due to blowing snow, poor visibility, and multiple collisions. By 7 p.m., the closure of the westbound lanes was expanded to Bloomfield Road in Chatham. The highway section was re-opened in both directions around 8:30 p.m.

St. Clair College cancelled all of its continuing education and apprenticeship classes, on both its Windsor and Chatham campuses.

The City of Windsor cancelled the 5:30 p.m. meeting of the Windsor Heritage Committee.

The Wednesday night Junior B hockey game between the LaSalle Vipers and the Chatham Maroons (the opener of a semifinal round) was cancelled and rescheduled for Thursday, 7 p.m., at the Vollmer Complex.

Pelee Island Transportation cancelled all flights and closed its Leamington office early.

All Essex County Library branches were closed as of 3 p.m.

The Town of Lakeshore cancelled all evening recreation classes at the Puce Sports & Leisure Centre, and also advised that garbage and recycling pickup would be delayed.

Admirably, Windsor’s Blood Donor Clinic at 3909 Grand Marais Rd. E. remained open for its regular Wednesday hours.
