Windsor police reported more than a dozen accidents throughout the city after snowfall began early Saturday morning.

“Nothing serious, just cars spinning out into the ditch and some minor collisions,” said Windsor police Staff Sgt. Jeff Verkoeyen. “There’s been no injuries at this point.”

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for Windsor-Essex early Saturday morning.

A low pressure system from the southern U.S. brought about 10 centimetres of snow to the area before changing to rain later in the day. Rain then  changed back to snow Saturday night, with a couple of more centimetres of snowfall.

Freezing rain may be possible throughout the day but is expected to be brief. While temperatures are forecast to be above zero, with a high of 4 C Saturday, Environment Canada is reminding people that untreated surfaces may still turn icy as the ground temperature may be below freezing due to the colder than normal recent temperatures.

Verkoeyen is reminding motorists to drive with extreme caution.

“People should slow down,” said Verkoeyen. “The roads are getting snow-covered, so slow is safe.”

Tecumseh Road eastbound at Lauzon Road was closed for short time at about 11 a.m. Saturday, but it has since reopened.
