Record-breaking low temperatures have made frozen pipes a serious concern for many Windsor-Essex properties — including Lakeshore Cinemas.
Operators of the 10-screen theatre complex were forced to cancel all Tuesday night showings due to a burst water main.
As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, there was no word on when the cinemas would be open again. Customers were advised to check ImagineCinemas.com or the Lakeshore Cinemas Facebook page for updates on specific movie times.
There were similar tales of woe in buildings across the region — both commercial and residential.
According to the Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating, issues arise in very cold weather when a water pipe is touching an uninsulated outside wall.
Water freezes inside the pipe, creating an ice blockage and resulting in overflow.
Besides the water pressure, the pipe also becomes damaged by expansion. A gallon of water will increase its volume by as much as nine per cent when frozen.
