Winter will tighten its icy grip on our region with another dump of snow expected this weekend followed by a blast of frigid air early in the week.
Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Friday afternoon warning that heavy snow — as much as 20 centimetres — could wallop the area Sunday afternoon and evening. The region is still digging out from about 35 centimetres of snow that fell over a two-day period to ring in the New Year.
A low pressure system is expected to develop over Oklahoma today and cross Southern Ontario late Sunday with heavy snow hitting Southwestern Ontario Sunday afternoon, said Environment Canada. The statement said many places will get 15 to 20 centimeters of snow and travel conditions will be poor.
The U.S. National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Detroit area Friday, warning that 15-30cm could accumulate in the area. Forecasters said up to eight cm could fall overnight, but the heaviest snow is expected Sunday afternoon.
Bitter cold is expected to follow Monday with north to northwest winds producing blowing and drifting snow.
The low on Monday is forecast at -13C and the low on Tuesday is forecast at -20C.
